  • Description:
  • Request for proposals are invited for Conduct a Comparative Study on the Agrarian Rural Household Economy Our vision of society is one in which rural women and men have agency and are realizing their livelihoods; one that relies on smallholder agro-ecological farming, and in which women are free and equal in all aspects of their lives. It is a society where rural women and men lead social movements to defend their rights to land and agriculture-related resources. A society where no child goes to bed hungry. Objectives ยท To establish if and where there has been any progressive change over the last decade in access to land for production, secure tenure for the farm dwellers; ยท How much advances have been made to ensure women and youth in particular become active participants in the economy; ยท How agricultural production can be advanced as an alternative to address food sovereignty and as a model for creation of employment opportunities; ยท How policy can be influenced so that it reflects a more pro-poor approach; ยท How movements can play part in the development of a bottom-up approach to influence policy. The Consultant(s) will work with Tshintsha Amakhaya to develop a methodology and survey instruments, using the 2011 study as a base, but building on and adapting it to encompass lessons and more recent developments in the country. The consultants will be required to engage with Tshintsha Amakhaya to identify geographical clusters and core sites for field research, building on the 9 districts identified in 2011 and adding another 5 districts (in consultation with Tshintsha Amakhaya), one each in the 5 provinces that were not included in the 2011 survey. Different instruments should be designed to accommodate farm dwellers, farm workers, and household and smallholder producers, including fishers as required. The objective is to bring to light a proper comparative analysis of what changes have taken place in the past decade. The consultants will provide a preliminary report to the TA collective which will be followed by a comprehensive report on the findings after the study has been finalised which will be published by TA. The research will be conducted in 14 districts in total. The distribution will be as follows: Western Cape 4 districts, Eastern Cape 2 districts, KwaZulu-Natal 2, Free State1, North West 1, Limpopo 1, Gauteng 1, Mpumalanga 1 and Northern Cape 1. The research should aim to gather data from 100 respondents in each of the sites identified together with TA members, thus targeting a total of 1,400 respondents. Overall, the sites should cover the range of communal land, peri-urban/urban and farm dwellers and workers on commercial farms.
