  • Description:
  • Expression of Interest are invited for Study on Climate Smart Agriculture Technologies and Investment Opportunities in Beef Value Chains in South Africa. The Scaling Up Climate Finance through Greening the Financial Sector or 30 by 30 zero program is a technical assistance program funded by Germany (BMU) and led by IFC in partnership with the World Bank (WB) and national stakeholders. It aims to harness the financial sector in targeted countries to considerably scale up private sector financing for climate mitigation and adaptation projects in line with their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) targets. The program is being implemented in the Philippines, South Africa, and Egypt, from 2021 to 2027. The programs short name reflects the dual target to increase climate lending by banks (to close to 30 percent of their portfolio by 2030), and to reduce coal exposure while managing climate-related risks. The Government of South Africa has identified agriculture as one of the key sectors that could contribute to greening the economy due to its backward and forward linkages with job generation, food security, foreign export earnings and raw material production, making the sector an important engine for the growth of the rest of the economy. At the same time, this potential is significantly threatened by climate change . With more than 70 percent of its croplands relying primarily on rainfall for farming, existing cropping and livestock systems will be directly affected by expected climate induced changes in precipitation and temperature patterns. The agricultural sector is therefore one of the focal sectors of South Africas National Climate Change Adaptation Strategy (NCCAS) that was promulgated in 2020 and of the countrys updated Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) under the Paris Agreement . The adoption of climate smart agriculture technologies provides opportunities for sustainable intensification consistent with food security and development goals, and climate change adaptation and mitigation needs. The main objectives of the study are: to comprehend beef value chain actors understanding of both physical and transitional climate risks affecting their business performance, and their strategies to cope with these risks; to assess the carbon footprint of the bank clients in beef value chains; to identify climate smart agriculture practices and technologies and investment opportunities best suited/relevant to the bank clients in selected value-chains; Publication Date: 06-Apr-2022 Expression of Interest Deadline: 19-Apr-2022
